Edison again comes up big against Troy

The CIF-SS Division 1A title was on the line the last time Edison and Troy girls met on a basketball court, and the Chargers won on a last-second shot by Bonnie Samuelson to take the championship.

Samuelson has graduated and is playing at Stanford, but her younger sisters, Karlie and Katie Lou, remain at Edison and they helped the No. 3 Chargers knock off No. 4 Troy, 67-59, in a nonleague game Saturday night at Edison High.

"It's not the same game at all," said Karlie, a junior, who had 21 points and four assists. "But I guess it's a little the same because we have my little sister with us here now."

Katie Lou, a freshman who averages more than 20 points a game, was limited to 14 points, but the Chargers also got strong performances from Rilee Horton (14 points, eight rebounds) and Monay Lee (nine points, five assists).

"It gives us more confidence, knowing we can beat a big team like Troy," Karlie said. "We'll know what to do when we come up against a team like them in the playoffs."

Karlie knocked down two of her three 3-pointers and had eight points in the first quarter to help the Chargers (18-2) build an eight-point lead. The Warriors (13-6) cut that lead to one point on Esther Du's fastbreak layup with 4:20 remaining in the first half.

In nonleague games:

No. 6 JSerra 65, Valley Christian of Cerritos 24: August Touchard scored 18 points, and Samara Hanna and Jenna Morris also scored in double figures to lead the host Lions (19-3).

Woodbridge 54, Dana Hills 39: Kelli Robinson drained five 3-pointers and had 15 points to help the visiting Warriors (14-7) rally from an 11-point deficit to beat the Dolphins (10-14).

In the Century League:

No. 5 Foothill 52, Esperanza 35: Molly Greubel and Taylor Hirz scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, as the host Knights (18-4, 7-1) defeated the Aztecs (11-11, 3-5).

No. 7 Canyon 64, El Dorado 52: Shanice Jackson scored 20 points, Lindsay Uyematsu made three 3-pointers and had 16 points and Sheraton Jones added 10 points to lift the host Comanches (15-7, 5-3) over the Golden Hawks (11-12, 1-7).

Villa Park 53, El Modena 35: Connie Ballestero knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 34 points to lead the host Spartans (14-7, 4-3) past the Vanguards (10-9, 0-7).

In the San Joaquin League:

Fairmont Prep 42, Avalon 38: Blaysden Varnadoe scored 21 points to help the visiting Huskies (12-5, 6-0) remain undefeated in league play with a victory over the Pilots (14-4, 5-2).
