Goodsell sparks Orange Lutheran victory
Orange Lutheran used a strong fourth-quarter push to defeat Chaparral of Temecula, 48-34, in the first round of the girls basketball Orange County Championships on Monday at Edison High.
The Lancers took a 31-27 lead into the fourth quarter before outscoring the Pumas, 17-7, to close out the game.
Abbey Goodsell led the way for Orange Lutheran with 23 points, including four 3-pointers.
The Lancers, ranked No. 5 in the county, improved to 7-4, while Chaparral dropped to 8-3.
In other Orange County Championships games:
Edison 79, Oxnard 19: Back after missing two games because of a sprained ankle, Karlie Samuelson scored 23 points for the Chargers (6-3) as they defeated the Yellowjackets (3-5).
Samuelson's younger sister, Katie Lou, a freshman, scored 16 points and Monay Lee had 15 ponts for Edison, ranked No. 3 in the county.
Hanford 62, San Clemente 50: Junior point guard Frankie Pinto scored a game high 21 points for the Tritons (7-3) in the loss to the Bullpups (8-1). Bayli McClard scored 17 points to lead Hanford.
Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) 56, Esperanza 46: Mariah Durian had 19 points and 17 rebounds and Kelly Burns had 18 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the Aztecs (6-5) to be able to knock off the Knights (8-3).
Millikan of Long Beach 48, Yorba Linda 47: Alexus Atchley got off a buzzer-beater, but it didn't go down and the Mustangs (6-4) lost to the Rams (6-4).
In the Larry Doyle Classic:
Santa Margarita 52, Sage Hill 18: Felicia Goh, Caitlin Heinly and Allie Prukop scored nine points apiece as the Eagles (6-5) took care of the Lightning (1-4) at Marina High.
Villa Park 55, Torrance 44: Connie Ballastero's 26 points propelled the Spartans (9-2) past the Tartars (3-3).
JSerra 70, Spanish Springs (Sparks, Nev.) 39: Coco Miller scored 27 points as the Lions (10-1), ranked No. 9 in thec ounty, took down the Cougars.
In the Garden Grove Christmas Classic:
Rosary 58, Century 12: Samantha Hernandez, Rachel Pau'u and Kristina Ybarra all scored in double figures to lead the Royals (7-4), ranked No. 10 in the county.
La Habra 54, Garden Grove 21: Allyson O'Brien knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 22 points to lead the Highlanders (9-2).
Sunny Hills 66, Valley Christian (Cerritos) 43: Madison Cruse and Alysa Simmons scored 22 points apiece for the Lancers (8-4).
Foothill 78, Oxford Academy 7: Taylor Hirz scored 16 points and Kourtnee Kanemaru and Kaylani Maiava had 10 points apiece for the Knights (8-3).
