CHRISTINE COTTER, FOR THE REGISTER
Capistrano Valley's Aleks Lipovic looks to shoot over Mater Dei's Xavier Johnson in the championship game of the Mission Viejo Diablos Inferno boys basketball tournament on Saturday.

Reinhardt leads the way in Mater Dei blowout

SPECIAL TO OCVARSITY.COM

When the passionately loud Capistrano Valley student section starts booing you every time you touch the basketball, usually you've done something right.

It took just nine minutes and some change for Katin Reinhardt to hear those boos Saturday night.

Mater Dei's senior guard scored a game-high 34 points to lead the top-ranked Monarchs in a 91-55 rout of the third-ranked Cougars in the championship game of the Diablos Inferno Tournament at Mission Viejo High.

"I love it," Reinhardt said referring to the chorus of boos from the Capo Valley students. "It's all good. I like it because it means I'm hitting big-time shots for my team."

The 6-foot-5 guard, who was voted co-MVP of the tournament with teammate Xavier Johnson, hit his first two shots (both threes) to give Mater Dei (4-0) a lead it would never relinquish.

He alone outscored the Cougars (3-1) in the first quarter.

"Katin started the game shooting like crazy," Monarchs coach Gary McKnight said. "He was hitting everything in sight and that definitely helped us."

Reinhardt poured in 24 first-half points and finished with six of Mater Dei's 11 three-pointers.

"When my shot is falling, the basket is wide open," Reinhardt said. "It's like a vacuum; the ball just gets sucked into it."

The Monarchs held a decisive 14-point lead after the first quarter, extended it to 30 early in the third quarter and never led by less than 23 points the rest of the game.

"We played well as a team and executed well," McKnight said. "I'm pleased with our kids' effort. It was a good first tournament. Capistrano Valley is a good team and I hope we helped them out the way they helped us tonight."

Stanley Johnson scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and Xavier Johnson added 17 despite being in foul trouble all game.

Aleks Lipovic scored 15 points for the Cougars.
