Mater Dei's Moore is state player of the year
Mater Dei's Ty Moore, the two-time Orange County baseball player of the year, was selected as California's player of the year Friday by Cal-Hi Sports.
Moore is the fourth consecutive county player to win the state honor. He follows Capistrano Valley's Tyler Matzek, Mater Dei's Cory Hahn and Edison's Henry Owens.
Moore excelled on the mound and at the plate. He finished his senior season 12-1 with a 0.83 ERA and 71 strikeouts as well as a .406 average, three home runs and 23 RBIs.
The UCLA signee said in a release that the award meant a lot to him because his former teammate also won it.
"This is one of the biggest honors I could imagine because it's the same one Cory had," Moore said.
Hahn was the county and state player of the year as a senior in 2010, but he was paralyzed early in his freshman season at Arizona State when he suffered a neck injury sliding headfirst into second base.
