Inside-outside game sparks Newport Harbor

BUENA PARK – The Newport Harbor basketball team has a wealth of experience and a variety of ways to attack opponents.

The Sailors used their total arsenal in a 70-50 victory over Buena Park in the final pool-play game of the Coyote Classic played Friday at Buena Park High School.

Newport Harbor (4-0) reaches the tournament final for the second consecutive year and will take on Villa Park for the championship Saturday at 5 p.m.

"Back in the early 1990's, there were a lot of good battles between Newport Harbor and Villa Park," Sailors first-year coach Bob Torribio said.

Even with the wide margin of victory, Torribio said the Coyotes (2-2) were tenacious throughout the contest.

"We knew it was going to be a battle," the coach said. "They were full court and in our face."

But the Coyotes had no answer for the Brian Robbs, the Sailors' sharp-shooting forward, or Kevin Rakestraw, their 7-foot center.

Robbs scored a game-high 17, with three 3-pointers, and Rakestraw scored 15, nearly all coming from under the basket.

Rakestraw also swatted away his share of Buena Park's shot attempts and was a presence at both ends.

Deven Boston led Buena Park with 13.

"We like our balance right now," Torribio said. "With us, it's the attack mentality that we've tried to establish since Day One."

The Sailors started slowly and didn't convert their first basket until late in the first quarter.

Leading 12-7 after the first quarter, Newport Harbor opened the second with a 14-4 run to take a 25-11 lead.

A pair of three-pointers from Robbs and one from Nic Sergeant in the final minutes of the second helped put Newport Harbor ahead, 38-22, at halftime.

Buena Park came out in the third and tried to make a game of it, going on an 8-4 run to start the quarter.

But three easy buckets from Rakestraw put the Sailors ahead, 48-34, late in the third.

The Sailors then went on 6-2 run to close the quarter and take a 54-38 lead into the fourth.

Buena Park still wasn't ready to concede however, scoring six consecutive points early in the quarter to get to 12.

But the Coyotes never got closer.
