Villa Park's David Trujillo wins heavyweight title
BREAThe best was definitely saved for last at the CIF-SS Southern Division Wrestling Championship on Saturday at Brea Olinda High.
In the only championship match among the 14 weight classes that pitted county wrestlers against each other, Villa Park heavyweight David Trujillo scored on a reversal in the fourth overtime for a 5-3 victory over Shea Bailey of El Dorado.
The Golden Hawks didn't have a first-place finisher, but their fourth-place team finish was tops among county schools.
Northview of Covina won with 199 points. Bloomington (186.5) was second, West Covina (151) third, El Dorado (135) fourth and Villa Park (127.5) fifth.
The Golden Hawks qualified five wrestlers for next weekend's Master's Tournament at Temecula Valley High.
Villa Park and Troy each qualified three.
Including Trujillo, three county wrestlers came away with CIF titles.
Elder Cruz of La Habra defeated Northview's Chris Auxier, 10-6, in the 215-pound final.
Cruz nearly pinned Auxier in the first period and then he prevented several escape attempts from the top position in the final period.
Buena Park's David Meza scored a takedown over Rim of the World of Lake Arrowhead's Seth Whisner with 12 seconds left in their match to capture the 140-pound title with a 4-2 victory.
La Habra's Jacob Rosales (103), Canyon's Matt Nadar (112) and Bram DeFerrante (145) and Troy's Robin Kim (171) and Alex Fairbanks (119) came up with second-place finishes.
