Bungert leads Villa Park to victory
HUNTINGTON BEACH - He has had some rounds this season that his Coach Chris Salio simply, called "oops."
But on Tuesday at Sea Cliff Country Club Alex Bungert showed the form that led him to the CIF State tournament last year.
For the second time this season, the Villa Park senior was the medalist for the second-ranked Spartans' boys golf team. On Tuesday he carded a 2-under 34 as Villa Park (4-3) posted a 187 to beat Edison by 14 strokes in this nonleague match.
Bungert birdied three holes - the 167-yard, par-3 No. 3, the 355-yard, par-4 No. 7 and the short 134-yard par-3 ninth hole.
"He has been up and down a little bit this year," Salio said. "But then steps up and has had some great rounds."
Like the one he turned recently at the Saticoy tournament. He shot a 75, the third lowest score that day.He has also shot the best round for the Spartans at their home course, carding a 3-under 33 at Green River. He was the medalist that day too.
"Overall," Bungert said, "I think we have all kind of gotten off to a slow start."
In 2009, the Spartans relied heavily on Bungert and his teammate Ryan Tetrault. Both ended up being Register All County First Team selections. This year though, five players have medaled for Villa Park in the first seven matches. Bungert is the only Spartan to repeat.
Matt Wilson shot a 1-under 35 at Green River against Sunny Hills on Monday. Corey Gard had a round at 2-under, there, too. Sophomore Kethan Reddy had his low round on the South Course at Coto de Caza, carding a 1-under 35. And Tetrault medaled with a 3-under 33 at Marbella during a 189-215 victory against St. Margaret's.
"I think we have more depth. Kethan is playing in the sixth sport and he is more consistent than who we had there last year," Salio said.
On Tuesday, Tetrault posted the second lowest round at Sea Cliff, coming into the clubhouse with a 1-over 37. Reddy was next for the Spartans with a 2-over 38. Kevin Su also had a 38 to lead the Chargers.
"We have had two four-match weeks, so it is hard to practice," Tetrault said. "Yeah, it (consistency) has been tough for all of us."
