Pacifica tops Kennedy, 28-7
GARDEN GROVE Luther Tolbert rushed for 84 yards and two touchdowns to lead Pacifica over Empire League rival Kennedy, 28-7, on Friday night.
The final score did not tell the whole story. Although the Mariners (3-3-1, 2-0) were dominant the whole game, they blew a couple opportunities in the red zone because they were not able to hold on to the football.
Tolbert set the tone early with touchdown runs of 12 and 8 yards to put Pacifica ahead in the early going.
Late in the second quarter, Mariners’ quarterback Mario Nava connected with tight end Josh Gulley for an 11-yard touchdown.
Trailing 21-0 at halftime, Kennedy was inside the 15-yard line when a pass interference call saved them it from turning the ball over on downs. Two plays later, running back Eli Pleasant had a 5-yard touchdown run to put the Fighting Irish on the scoreboard.
On the ensuing drive, Nava heaved the ball into the end zone and Joel Willis made a great catch to make it a three-touchdown lead in the third quarter.
The Fighting Irish (4-3, 1-1) could not get their offense going as quarterback Andy Peterson was intercepted a total of three times.
Pleasant tried to keep his team in the game with his all-around play; he had a total of 139 yards from scrimmage.
