GARDEN GROVE - Pacifica stayed in the thick of the Empire League race with a 45-21 victory over Katella on Friday night at Bolsa Grande High.
The Mariners (3-4, 1-1) ran up 292 total yards in the first half and took control by scoring on all of their first-half possessions.
Senior running back Josh Brannon led the offensive charge with 195 yards on 20 carries three touchdowns to help Pacifica take a 38-0 lead at the half.
Brannon, who didn't take a handoff after the midway point of the second quarter, received scoring help via a 35-yard scoring pass from Mario Nava connected with Clay Leonard on a 35-yard TD pass; Cody Johnson scored on a 1-yard run; and Seth Trader booted a 25-yard field goal, all in the first half.
After being held to two first downs and 61 total yards in the first half, Katella (1-6, 0-2) used a pair of Nikio Bush scoring runs in the first six minutes of the third to cut the deficit to 38-14.
Johnson added a 23-yard scoring run in the third with Katella closing the scoring with a 13-yard pass from Matt Judd to Dexter Carter.Contact the writer: preps@ocregister.com
