Canyon battles back to beat El Modena
El Modena vs. Canyon
ORANGE - Canyon was able to dig itself out of an early hole in a 31-9 Century League victory over host El Modena on Friday. (Full game stats.)
After the Vanguards converted two first-quarter turnovers by Canyon into a field goal and a touchdown, the Comanches stormed back with 31 consecutive points.
With two games remaining, the Comanches (4-4, 2-1) are in a three-way tie for second place with Villa Park and El Dorado. Tustin is alone in first.
Canyon's defense kept El Modena (1-7, 0-3) out of the end zone and never let the Vanguards advance past the Comanches 40 in the second half.
El Modena's touchdown came in the first quarter when Taylor Jenkins recovered a fumble in the end zone.
"Our defense played great tonight," Canyon coach Brent McKee said. "We just have to keep getting better."
Canyon quarterback Nick Mercurio completed 6.of 10 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.
El Modena's Chris Barnett rushed for 94 yards on 29 carries.
Both field-goal kickers hit long field goals: El Modena's Michael Collazo nailed one from 46 yards, and Canyon's Colton Grandbouche converted from 41 yards.
