BREA - Canyon rolled up 331 yards on the ground, scored 41 consecutive points and took a big step toward qualifying for the CIF-SS Southwest Division playoffs with a 48-14 Century League rout over Brea Olinda on Friday night.
Eleven Comanches carried the ball, led by Jared Gobert with 137 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries, including an 84-yard scoring run on the first play of the second half. Canyon (5-4, 3-1) will need a victory over Villa Park next week to ensure its postseason berth.
Brea Olinda (1-8, 0-4), which had been held to just nine points in its first three league games, managed a pair of second-half scores on an 8-yard run by Nadim Itmaizeh and a 20-yard pass from Chris Panozzo to Brett Kelley.
Canyon's defense opened the scoring as Carter Calhoun intercepted a Michael Frisina pass and returned it 13 yards as the Comanches led, 6-0, just 1:11 into the game.
Marcio Marchena scored on touchdowns runs of 3 and 19 yards for the Comanches in the first half.
