Missing piece doesn't slow down Ocean View

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Even though a key component to the team was missing, Ocean View still had plenty in reserve for Wednesday’s CIF-SS Division 3A first round game against Laguna Hills.

Sophomore guard Kendall Small scored 26 points and junior forward Dillon Reise had 25 to lead the fourth-seeded Seahawks to the 78-53 home victory over Laguna Hills (8-20).

Small added five assists, five steals and seven rebounds. Reise led Ocean View (21-6) with nine rebounds. Josh Mishler led with nine assists.

“Kendall is a guy that makes me a better coach,” Ocean View coach Tim Walsh said. “He’s a young kid, he’s pretty intelligent and savvy around the basket. His ability to see the play ahead on both offense and defense is amazing and really sets him apart from other players, and Dillon (Reise) was huge hitting big 3’s when he had the opportunity.”

The Seahawks played without sophomore Tyler Burch, who was serving a one-game suspension after receiving two technical fouls in the final game of the regular season. By CIF rules, Burch had to sit out the game and couldn’t be in attendance.

With the victory, Ocean View will travel to face Barstow, an at-large team from the Desert Sky League, in the second round Friday. Barstow defeated Gladstone of Covina, 41-38, in a first-round game.

“You take away a guy that’s been playing really good basketball the last month and obviously it is going to have a huge impact,” Walsh said. “People talk about Tyler because of what he does on offense, but he’s important on the defensive end as well.

“If you take out a guy who has virtually been playing the entire game and you take him out of our lineup, it changes the way we play. As great as he is, I was very confident from the start that we have guys that can go in and step up and do some things.”

Jelani Jackson also helped ease the burden of the absent Burch with 16 points.

Austin Williams led Laguna Hills with 14 points. Jordan Johnson added 11.
