Pola leads Segerstrom to Golden West title
HUNTINGTON BEACH - The Golden West League softball championship has come down to Segerstrom and Ocean View the past five seasons, including the regular-season finale between the two rivals on Wednesday at Ocean View High.
The Jaguars avenged their lone league loss and clinched their second consecutive league title with a 3-0 victory over the Seahawks.
Segerstrom, ranked No. 4 in CIF-SS Division 4, finished the regular season 20-4-1 overall and 9-1 in league, while Ocean View, ranked No. 8 in Division 4, is 16-9 and 8-2.
"It feels really good, especially, it being my senior year, and I couldn't have done it without the five seniors, the whole starting infield," said Segerstrom ace Selene Pola, who has signed with Long Beach State. "With my defense, and the hitting came through big, it was just a great game overall. We came through as a team."
Pola pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks to record the shutout. She also drove in the first run with a single in the top of the fourth.
Ocean View's junior ace Brittany Hitchcock, who has committed to Hawaii, allowed five hits, one earned run, two walks and struck out five to take the loss. Hitchcock also went 2 for 3.
Aimee Madrid and Ashley Ramirez got back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the seventh. An error by the center fielder on Ramirez's single allowed the ball to roll to the fence and Madrid scored from first. Desi Lopez drove in Ramirez with a single to give Segerstrom a 3-0 lead.
Pola was able to get out of jams in the fourth and fifth when Ocean View stranded runners on second and third and on third, respectively. She retired the final eight batters she faced to seal the victory.
