Woolbert's run seals Northwood triumph
IRVINE - Northwood running back David Woolbert and his teammates were feeling a little anxious in the fourth quarter of Friday night’s nonleague game against Los Amigos at Irvine High.
But Woolbert sealed the victory with a 68-yard touchdown run with 8:38 left to lead the Timberwolves to a 42-27 victory over the Lobos.
Woolbert, who also had TD runs of 66 yards in the first quarter and 76 yards in the second quarter, wound up with a career-high 275 yards on 15 carries.
"I wasn’t going to be denied that last one," Woolbert said. "We needed this; it was either go into league with a winning record or go in with a losing record."
Northwood (3-2) moved out to a 35-13 lead in the third quarter when quarterback Kyle Beane connected with Reed Gubernick on a 46-yard TD pass.
But Los Amigos (1-4) battled back. Quarterback Daniel Hernandez, who also had three touchdowns in the game, scored on a 84-yard run late in the third to make it 35-20.
Hernandez then scored from 2 yards out early in the fourth to cut the lead to 835-27, causing the Timberwolves to squirm.
But Woolbert’s final TD gave Northwood some breathing room.
“Offensively, we played well and we thought we needed to do that because they got some weapons on offense and they did a good job of attacking us,” Northwood coach Rick Curtis said. “Defensively, we struggled, but offensively I thought we played really well.”
“I thought David ran well and Kyle played a great game.”
Hernandez, besides rushing for 46 yards, completed 17 of 31 passes for 226 yards and one touchdown.
Hernandez gave Los Amigos an early 6-0 lead when he scored on a 7-yard TD run in the first quarter.
