No. 1 seed Saddleback Valley Christian tripped up
SVC vs. Mojave
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO- Saddleback Valley Christian's A-11 spread offense was supposed to be the next big thing, giving the top seed in the Northeast Division playoffs the firepower to claim a CIF-SS title.
Instead, the Warriors' undefeated season came to a crashing halt at the hands of Mojave's decidedly old school one-back offense.
The Mustangs rushed for 255 yards and overpowered SVC, 35-14, Friday night at JSerra High. (Full game stats.)
Mojave junior running back Darren Johnson ran for 213 yards on 23 carries and set the tone early with his 65-yard touchdown. Johnson added another score in the fourth quarter.
"We knew if they had (Johnson) it would be a little bit more of a matchup problem than we had seen all season long," Warriors coach Gary Chambers said.
Quarterback Doug Wilson was 8 for 8 passing for 155 yards and two touchdowns as Mojave improved to 6-5.
SVC (10-1) seemed as if it would mount a challenge, driving to the Mojave 29 and down by two scores. On the last play of the third quarter, Josh Squirrell's pitch to William Hinn on a reverse was mishandled.
The Warriors recovered, but were at midfield. They never again challenged.
"We just had too many mistakes. With our athleticism, we overcame them up until tonight," Chambers said.
Hinn scored both SVC touchdowns and finished with 118 yards of total offense.
