G.W. Mix has had some outstanding teams in his three years as head coach of the Corona del Mar boys lacrosse team. But the 2012 squad will stand out for some time.

Mix, the Register’s Coach of the Year, led the Sea Kings to a 24-0 record and their first Southern Section and county titles.

“It was really nice to see a group of kids who have worked so hard and done things the right way get rewarded for that, because it doesn’t always happen,” Mix said. “And, obviously, a lot of things have to come together for a team to have as nice a season as we had, but a lot of those things kind of fell into place and a lot of the credit goes to the kids and the other coaches on the staff for making it work.

“They played hard for each other. I think that was probably the most important factor all season long. They were really concerned about not letting one another down, not just in games but in practices.”

Mix is in his sixth season with the CdM program and has been able to coach two of his sons – Ryan, who graduated two years ago and is now a sophomore at Notre Dame, and Casey, who was a junior on this year’s squad.

“It’s fun. It enables you to spend time with them and spend time with their friends and be around them quite a bit, which as a father is special,” Mix said. “But they’re good kids, they work hard and they’ve got good friends and good teammates, so they make it pretty easy to coach them.”

Mix played lacrosse at the University of Pennsylvania, where he later became the head coach (1991-1994).

“It’s been fun to watch,” Mix said. “There are some guys who have worked awful hard in Orange County to get the game where it is, but to watch the growth in the last six or eight years has been remarkable.”

Mix and his wife Mary also have a 10-year-old son Kyle, who plays soccer.

Coaching lacrosse is part of a busy life for Mix, who is a managing partner of The Cheetah Group, Inc., a brand development, marketing and management firm, specializing in the entertainment and sports industries.

Mix will soon begin to look toward next season and the opportunity for the Sea Kings to repeat.

“We’re going to be competitive, our kids work hard,” he said. “We have some nice, young players. We have some work to do, but we’re not going to go away, that’s for sure.”
