Mater Dei girls end Orange Lutheran's title hopes
SANTA ANA – Coming into Monday’s game against Mater Dei, victories were a necessity for the No. 8 Orange Lutheran girls soccer team.
The Lancers trailed Santa Margarita in the standings, but still had aspirations for a Trinity League title.
Those hopes took a huge blow against the Monarchs. Mater Dei came out with an inspired performance on Senior Day and played Orange Lutheran to a 1-1 tie.
The loss officially secured the league title for Santa Margarita.
The Monarchs (9-9-4, 2-4-1) got on the board first when Shannon McAndrews scored a goal with 9:47 remaining in the first half. It was Mater Dei’s first and only breakthrough against Lancers goalkeeper Sarah Klinkenberg, despite multiple opportunities throughout the first half.
A little more than six minutes later, Andrea Koukladas scored for Orange Lutheran (15-3-5, 3-2-2) to even the game at one.
Save for one good look the Lancers had at the goal midway through the second half, neither team put together much of a scoring threat after the second goal.
“I was real proud. Today was our last home Trinity League match for our seniors,” Monarchs coach Matty West said. “I thought the girls showed a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm and were really competitive.”
Julia Murphy, along with Klinkenberg, stood out in net as both teams showed defensive intensity throughout the game.
“It was a great, hard-fought game,” Murphy said. “Our defense was really good.”
Orange Lutheran will close out its regular season Wednesday when it travels to JSerra, while Mater Dei will be playing at Rosary.
