This story has updated McQuin Baron's save total to 25
Mater Dei's roll in boys water polo continued Saturday.
Junior goalie McQuin Baron made 25 saves to help the top-ranked Monarchs defeat Loyola of Los Angeles, 15-10, in the finals of the North-South Challenge at Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton.
Center Jon Walters added five goals and his brother, James, scored three as the Mater Dei (20-0) extended its Southern Section-record winning streak to 68 matches. They also captured the tournament for the third consecutive season.
In the semifinals, Mater Dei rallied from a halftime-deficit against Los Alamitos to post a 13-9 victory. The Griffins led, 7-6, entering the third, but Mater Dei responded by taking the frame, 5-0. Kent Inoue and Jon Walters each finished with five goals.
"Considering we had to play Los Alamitos and Loyola back-to-back, I am extremely pleased with the result," Mater Dei coach Chris Segesman wrote in a text message. "The guys kept their focus and played for one another."
