2012 BOYS COACH OF THE YEAR

Rick Martinez, Mater Dei

In his 18th season at the helm of the Monarchs track and field program, Martinez guided a well-balanced squad to a stellar season. They finished a perfect 5-0 to win their second consecutive Trinity League title. Mater Dei also won the Orange County Championships team title for the first time in school history. Between both boys and girls program, Martinez is now a four-time Register Coach of the Year award winner.

"We had really exceptional individuals that we knew would perform well, but it was the secondary level athletes that helped pick things up and make us a better team," Martinez said. "We try to have a balanced team, and our motto has always been team first and individuals second. The kids have really taken ownership of that."
