OCVarsity previews football teams for the 2008-09 season.

Mater Dei

Last season: 9-2, 3-1 (tied for first)

Postseason: 2007, lost to Crespi, 48-26, in Pac-5 second round.

Coach: Bruce Rollinson (20th year, 191-51-2)

Outlook: The Monarchs welcome back Matt Barkley, last year's county offensive player of the year and Gatorade national player of the year. He will throw to a new, inexperienced group of receivers but that did not seem to be a problem last year when Barkley set school single-season passing records. They have returnees at fullback and tailback, too, and a typically big offensive line led by junior Chris Ward. The defense has speed and size.

Home stadium: Santa Ana Stadium.

Factoid: At 6,579 passing yards, Barkley already is Mater Dei's career leader.

Fastest: Victor Blackwell, Ario Winston.
