Esperanza wrestling will have new look

:

Esperanza's wrestling program will have a new look next year as Coach Steve Marshall and assistant coach Brian Malavar have announced their resignations to pursue administrative jobs.

Assistant coach Brian Fortenbaugh has been promoted to replace Marshall.

Marshall informed the team of their decisions earlier in the week.

Marshall has coached for 20 years, including the past 11 at Esperanza.

"I'm going to miss it," Marshall said. "I enjoyed the camaraderie with the other coaches; it is one big family.

"But I'm not going to disappear, I'm going to be supportive and help out where I can."

Marshall, who also serves as the Dean of Students at Esperanza, said that he is a candidate for the assistant principal's job at Esperanza. He said he expects a decision to be made in the next week.

Malavar recently accepted an assistant principal's job at a junior high school in Bakersfield.

Malavar, who wrestled at Loara High, has been a coach for 12 years, including the past five years as an assistant with the Aztecs and Marshall.

Last year, the Aztecs finished third in the Orange County coaches poll.

The Aztecs had six Sunset League individual champions and advanced five wrestlers to the Masters Meet.

The Aztecs also showed their strength at the CIF-SS DivisionI Dual Championships, advancing to the semifinals, before losing to eventual champion Temecula Valley.

"I'm really excited for the future of the program," Marshall said. "Brian (Fortenbaugh) is young and energetic.

"He has new ideas, and he's going to do a good job."

The start time for today's CIF-SS DivisionI baseball game between Mater Dei and Martin Luther King of Riverside has been switched to 6:30p.m., Monarch coach Burt Call said.

Call also confirmed that Scott DeNault (San Diego) and Kurt Yacko (Chapman) have signed letters of intent.
