Markovsky shows he can carry Orange Lutheran
MISSION VIEJO - Just over a month ago, an injury to Orange Lutheran starting quarterback Bobby Wheatley thrusted defensive back Mike Markovsky under center.
After his performance Friday night, Markovsky’s days as a defender might only be a memory.
The junior connected on 16 of 18 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown to lead the Lancers past Santa Margarita, 38-20, in the Trinity League final at Saddleback College.
Orange Lutheran (6-4, 4-1) will enter next week’s CIF-SS Pac-5 playoffs as the second seed from the Trinity League.
“This game sends us into next week on a positive note,” Lancers coach Jim Kunau said.
Markovsky guided the Lancers to scoring drives on each of their first six possessions. before being pulled in the third quarter.
“I credit our quarterback coach Greg Cicero with the development of Mike,” Kunau said. “With Greg’s coaching and Mike’s commitment to learning, he has blossomed.”
In addition to Markovsky’s aerial assault of the Santa Margarita secondary, running back Damani Wilson rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
Santa Margarita (3-7, 0-5) scored on its final three possessions of the fourth quarter, including a 1-yard TD plunge by Troy Willett on the game’s final play.
It is the first time in the program’s 21-year history it has failed to win a league game.
