Tartans finish 10-0
St. Margaret's vs. Brethren Christian recap.
HUNTINGTON BEACH- Coach Harry Welch has been with St. Margaret's for only five months. But he has the Tartans in position to repeat what they did a season ago.
St. Margaret's scored 14 points in each quarter on its way to a 56-0 shutout of Brethren Christian in an Academy League game on Friday at Ocean View High.
The victory likely means the Tartans (10-0, 3-0), the defending Division V champions who are ranked No. 1 in the division, will enter the playoffs as the division's top seed.
St. Margaret's will play host a first-round playoff game next Friday but won't know who it will oppose until seedings are announced Sunday.
"The kids played for a (league) championship and an undefeated season," Welsh said. "They got it."
Brethren Christian (4-6, 1-2) put up a gutsy defensive effort, recovering one Tartan fumble and forcing two turnovers on downs.
"We tried our best, but their athletes took over," Warriors coach Bruce Eien said.
St. Margaret's Hunter Steffien rushed for 134 yards, caught a 71-yard touchdown pass and blocked a punt that he recovered in the end zone.Contact the writer: preps@ocregister.com
