CVC runs into a tough Maranatha team
Team falls to 0-3 against unbeaten Maranatha.
Capistrano Valley Christian (0-3) got its initial first down came with 3:40 remaining in the game. The Eagles’ offense gained 17 total yards, compared to 392 for Maranatha. CVC’s only pass attempt was intercepted.
The Eagles started the game with only 17 players and by the beginning of the second half were down to 13.
Maranatha was coming off a comeback victory over La Salle of Pasadena last week.
“(The victory) was good; but it was a dangerous one,” Maranatha coach Joel Murphy said. “We knew they weren’t going to be the same type of caliber team and we feared sloppy play. And there was a bit of that.”
Maranatha quarterback Matt Schilz played only one quarter, but still managed to throw for 145 yards on 5 of 8 passing, including a 76-yard touchdown strike to Danny Beckwith.
“You don’t get a gem like that every week,” Murphy said. “Especially after last week.”
