Huntington Beach to meet CdM in O.C. Championships final
The Oilers storm through while the Sea Kings scamble to survive.
The Orange County Championship finalists played through contrasting routes to Monday's championship match, but nevertheless Huntington Beach and Corona del Mar will meet at 7 p.m. at Edison for the title of county's best boys volleyball team.
Huntington Beach (14-3) won its pool and is unbeaten after defeating Mission Viejo, 25-23, 25-18, in the Saturday's semifinal at Edison.
The Sea Kings (6-4), on the other hand, lost both Friday matches to fall to 0-2, and reached the gold bracket only when Huntington Beach defeated Mater Dei in pool play.
Corona del Mar beat Edison, 25-22, 23-25, 18-16, in the semifinals to set up the showdown with the Oilers, who beat Corona del Mar during pool play on Friday.
"We are excited to play them because they are a really good team," Corona del Mar coach Steve Conti said. "I'm not the type of guy who looks at it as a revenge factor. It gives us an opportunity to play a really good team with no weak spots."
Corona del Mar defeated Newport Harbor in the quarterfinals, 25-20, 27-25, The Sea Kings faces a match point trailing 14-12 in Game 3 against Edison before rallying.
Huntington Beach swept Dana Hills, 25-20, 26-24, in the quarterfinals.
"We are doing something right to be here," Oilers coach Craig Pazanti said. "We are happy to be playing Monday night."
Norco and Francis Parker reached the finals of Division 2, played at 6 p.m. Monday at Edison.

No. 4 JSerra 8, Santa Margarita 2: Bret Dahlson was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs as the Lions opened league play with a victory over the Eagles (4-3, 0-1). The Lions (7-1, 1-0) scored two runs in the third to take the lead, 2-1. They added three runs in the fourth.
Grahamm Wiest (1-1) gave up two runs in six innings while striking out 10. Keaton Siomkin struck out two of the three hitters he faced in the seventh to end the game.
