Orange Lutheran almost perfect in rout of Rialto

FOR OCVARSITY.COM

SANTA ANA – The Orange Lutheran girls basketball team showed Friday at the Nike Extravaganza that it can be really good when clicking on all cylinders.

"We had to play a really smart game today," Orange Lutheran coach Tom Howard said. "We knew we had to take care of the ball and limit turnovers. Defensively our goal as always was to protect the paint ... and finish it off by limiting them (Rialto) to one shot."

Abbey Goodsell scored a game-high 15 points, and Jessica Salottolo added 14 to help pace No. 5 Orange Lutheran to a 56-25 romp over Rialto in a nonleague game at Mater Dei.

With the victory, Orange Lutheran (20-3) is 12-1 against teams from outside of the county. The Lancers will take a five-game winning streak into their rematch against No. 1 Mater Dei on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Orange Lutheran dominated all facets of the game and put on a nearly flawless performance against Rialto (17-5).

The Lancers won the rebounding battle, 40-27, while also forcing the Knights into 19 turnovers. Orange Lutheran shot 45.3 percent from the floor, and Rialto finished 10 of 50 (20 percent).

Rialto's leading scorer, Brittany Neely, was limited to seven points on 3-of-16 shooting. The Lancers defense forced Neely and the Knights to settle for long-range jumpshots as they effectively took away driving lanes and opportunities at easy points. Orange Lutheran held Rialto to under 10 points in every quarter.

Salottolo scored all of her points in the first half on 50 percent shooting from the field. Goodsell carried the load in the third as she scored 11 of the Lancers 16 points.

After a slow start, Orange Lutheran ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 16-9 lead. The second quarter was much of the same as the Lancers outscored the Knights 11-4.

Orange Lutheran put the game away in the third and took a 43-19 lead in to the fourth quarter.
