Inspired Mater Dei demolishes Orange Lutheran

OCVARSITY.COM

Mater Dei's boys basketball team won a state championship last year, but there were a couple of disappointments.

One was the school's first-ever loss to Orange Lutheran in boys basketball. That memory provided the fuel Wednesday, as the Monarchs easily beat Lutheran, 90-65, in a Trinity League game at Orange Lutheran.

“We've been waiting for this game,” Mater Dei junior guard Jordan Strawberry said.

Katin Reinhardt scored 25 points for Mater Dei. The Monarchs got 23 points and 13 rebounds from Xavier Johnson, and 21 points and 12 rebounds from Stanley Johnson. Strawberry had six assists.

Orange Lutheran's Gabe York scored 28 points, and Payton Banks added 13 for the Lancers.

Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, in California and in CIF-Southern Section Division 1AA, is 20-2 overall and in first place in the Trinity League with a 7-0 league record. The Monarchs play St. John Bosco of Bellflower, 6-1 in league, at Mater Dei on Friday at 7:30 p.m. as part of the first day of the two-day Nike Extravaganza.

Lutheran (14-9, 4-4) is No. 4 in the county, No. 20 in California and No. 3 in CIF-SS 1A. The Lancers play the state's No. 2 team, Long Beach Poly, in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Mater Dei essentially put away Wednesday's victory with a 32-point second quarter. Reinhardt, a 6-foot-5 senior guard who signed with UNLV who is averaging 20 points a game and has been particularly good the past five weeks, was 5 for 6 from the floor in the quarter for 12 points.

The Monarchs had a 46-29 lead at halftime, and the Lancers would get no closer than that 17-point margin in the second half.

York, averaging 25 points a game, scored 19 in the second half.
