Lee, Vu tie for eighth at state championship

OCVARSITY.COM

Los Alamitos junior Esther Lee and Fountain Valley freshman Lilia Vu, the only two Orange County golfers to qualify for the CIF State championship, both carded a 4-over-par 76 in the prestigious girls golf tournament on Tuesday at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach.

That put them in a 10-way tie for eighth, five strokes behind Sarah Cho (Torrey Pines), who won the state championship after surviving a two-hole sudden death playoff with Cha Cha Willhoite of Palm Desert. Torrey Pines won the team competion with a 381.

This is the second consecutive year Lee has played for the state championship.

Last season she came in second at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga.

On Tuesday, Lee bogeyed three of her first five holes and took a double-bogey six on the 351-yard, par-4 No. 7 to go out with a 5-over-par 41.

Vu also had some trouble on the front nine, bogeying three consecutive holes. Both players holed one birdie in their round.

Lee and Vu earned their spots through the So Cal Championship in Murrieta. Lee finished tied for third at The Golf Club at Rancho California with a 1-over-par 73. Lee had to survive a sudden-death playoff to make it to state after shooting a 76.
