Los Al's Lee comes up big in a playoff to win the Sunset League
CHINO HILLS - As soon as the ball left his 9 iron on the first hole of the sudden death playoff, John Lee had a feeling that this shot was going to be good. He had no idea though, that all it would take after that was an easy tap in to win the Sunset League Individual Championship.
After sending a drive 348-yards down the fairway on the first hole on the North Course at Los Serranos Country Club, Lee of Los Alamitos landed his approach with 15 inches of the pin, leaving him with an easy putt for an eagle on the 483-yard par 5. He holed it and won the tournament. Fountain Valley's Mitchell Char ended up with bridie.
Both players finished the 36-hole event with 142 strokes. Char, however, had bragging rights on Wednesday, shooting a 3-under 69, which was better than Lee's 70.
Lee posted a double-bogey on the last hole of the tournament, ending a string of five consecutive birdies.
"This is revenge I guess, because I kind of messed up last year, too," Lee said. "Up until that one stretch, I really wasn't playing well today."
The Sunset League had seven players advance from this tournament to the CIF Individual regional, meaning Andre Vu (Fountain Valley), Jeff Fuzzard (Marina), Ricky Owaki (Esperanza), John Kim (Los Alamitos) and Zach Eddy (Newport Harbor) also qualified.
