Swimming roundup: The Vaqueros win for the first time this season, 91-79.

Irvine’s Rikiya Yano and Corona del Mar’s Yutaro Yamashita split their duels on Wednesday.

The Vaqueros’ boys, however, took the entire winner’s share.

Irvine helped make Yano’s Vaquero debut memorable as it knocked off Corona del Mar, 91-79, in a key Pacific Coast League swim meet at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine.

Irvine (1-4, 1-1) squared its record in league and handed front-runner Corona del Mar (2-2, 2-1) its first league defeat.

Corona del Mar’s boys were coming off an impressive 98-72 league victory against University last week. University earlier beat Irvine, 91-79, in league.

But the Vaqueros bounced back Wednesday.

“I don’t remember a dual meet performance from my team like this in years,” Irvine coach Ken Dory said.

Swimming in his first high school meet since 2006, Yano helped lead the Vaqueros by edging Yamashita to claim the 200-yard freestyle in a county-leading 1 minute, 42.14 seconds.

Yamashita touched second with a 1:42.29.

The seniors later met in the 100 butterfly. Yamashita won another close race by touching in a county-leading 51.38. Yano placed second with a 51.44.

“They had fun,” Dory said. “It was close.”

Yano raced for Woodbridge as a freshman and sophomore but sat out his junior season after transferring to Irvine.

Freshman John Kim lowered Corona del Mar’s school record in the 100 breaststroke with a quick 59.49.
