Aliso Niguel stuns San Clemente
The South Coast League boys water polo race delivered another upset Tuesday.
Goalie Brett Argersinger made 15 saves and Ryan Villanueva added four goals as Aliso Niguel stunned visiting San Clemente, 9-8.
On Monday, San Clemente knocked off No. 3 El Toro, 11-10, to move into contention to claim at least a share of the league title. But Aliso Niguel sank those aspirations.
"I wasn't shocked — I'd say other people were shocked," Aliso Niguel coach Erick Lynch said of the victory. "We have the talent."
Aliso Niguel finished the Division 1 league at 2-6. With the Wolverines' victory and Dana Hills' 20-8 triumph against Capistrano Valley, the Dolphins (20-7, 6-1) clinched at least a share of the league title.
On Thursday, Dana Hills plays at San Clemente (4-3 in league) while El Toro (5-2) plays at Capistrano Valley (1-6).
In nonleague matches:
No. 1 Mater Dei 14, Long Beach Wilson 9: Jon Walters scored nine goals and McQuin Baron made 21 saves at Belmont Plaza to lead the visiting Monarchs (25-0), who played without attacker James Walters (ill).
No. 3 El Toro 11, No. 6 Laguna Beach 9: The host Chargers (19-8) scored four goals in the fourth to rally past the Breakers (18-9), who played without Riley Thomas (facial cut).
In the Pacific Coast League:
University 13, No. 10 Northwood 9: Jake Sanders and Griffin Chappell each scored five goals as the host Trojans (20-8, 7-3) force a second-place with the Timberwolves (20-9, 7-3). Northwood won the coin flip for the No. 2 seed.
In the Garden Grove League:
Los Amigos 12, La Quinta 9: Alberto Navarro made 15 saves and Davis Phan added four goals at Garden Grove as the Lobos (11-11) sealed the outright league crown.
