Newport Harbor rides strong start to sweep of Edison
High school volleyball.
The big match for the city championship against Corona del Mar is on the horizon for the Newport Harbor girls volleyball team.
Thursday, the sixth-ranked Sailors (12-3, 1-0) placed their focus on Sunset League play, kicking off their quest for the league title by sweeping host Edison, 25-19, 25-12, 27-25.
The Chargers are 7-10 overall and 0-1 in league.
"That's a great win for us especially starting league," Newport Harbor coach Dan Glenn said. "We know how well-coached they (Edison) are, and that's a good solid team. Fortunately, we got off to good start."
Carolyn Bockrath led the Sailors with 16 kills. Tristen Thompson added 12. Torey Thompson had 40 assists.
After a couple of relatively easy victories, the Sailors faced the possibility of having the match extended to a fourth set.
Edison led 15-11 at one point, but the Sailors would eventually catch them at 19-19 on a kill from Bockrath.
Later, Newport Harbor scored the final two points to snap a 25-25 tie and close out the match.
"This league is going to be so tough this year," Glenn said. "To be on the road against a team as good as Edison and to get a win is great for us. That's a great way to start off league."
Edison defeated Newport Harbor four times last season, twice in league and two other times in tournaments.
The teams met earlier this season at the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas with the Sailors winning.
The teams will meet again Oct. 16 at Newport Harbor.
Newport Harbor will turn its attention to third-ranked Corona del Mar on Saturday night in the Battle of the Bay match.
CdM has won the past two Battle of the Bay matches. The teams are both in Division 1AA this year.
"It is good to be playing an opponent that tough," Glenn said of Corona del Mar. "It will help us later on in league."
