Edison turns on power to beat Fountain Valley

Fountain Valley was out to avenge one of its Sunset League losses and it looked like the Barons were on their way to accomplishing their goal when they took a two-run lead in the top of the second inning.

No. 5 Edison shut down any thoughts of a Fountain Valley upset when it responded with three runs in the bottom of the second, and the Chargers went on to a 5-2 victory on Tuesday at Edison High.

Maddy Hickman and Jessica Plaza erased Fountain Valley's lead with back-to-back home runs to lead off the bottom of the second, and Chiara DeMarco added an RBI double to give the Chargers a lead they would not relinquish.

"We were just looking for a good pitch to hit and it just happened back-to-back," Plaza said. "I think it was just a momentum turner right there."

Edison (20-3, 6-1) remains tied for first place in the Sunset League with No. 4 Los Alamitos (18-6, 6-1), which beat Edison, 2-1, on April 24. The two teams meet again in the regular-season finale on May 10 at Edison.

Brenda Bott staked Fountain Valley to a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot in the top of the second.

Fountain Valley threatened a couple more times, but Sammy Cordova pitched her way out of difficulty for the complete-game victory. Cordova struck out Khailey Campos with runners on second and third to end the third. She struck out Randi Fehser with runners on first and second to end the sixth.

Cordova scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out eight.
