Hulick finally gets the better of Trujillo
This time Carl Hulick got the takedown he has been missing in his encounters with David Trujillo.
As expected, Hulick of Esperanza and Trujillo of Villa Park squared off in the heavyweight title match at Friday's Century League wrestling finals at El Modena High.
This was the third match of the season between the two, and Hulick was finally able to pull out the victory.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the third period, Hulick got the takedown and held on for a 3-2 victory to win the league title.
Trujillo entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in the county at heavyweight; Hulick was second.
Trujillo defeated Hulick in their Century League dual and again at Five Counties in January.
"I wrestled a smart match and it worked in my favor," Hulick said. "Of course, he's going to be practicing to beat me."
The two could meet in two weeks at the CIF-SS Southern Division Individuals.
As a seven-team league, the top four wrestlers at each weight class qualify for Individuals, which will take place Feb. 17-18 at Brea Olinda High.
El Dorado led all teams with 12 qualifiers.
Villa Park had 11, Canyon 10, Brea Olinda eight and El Modena six.
Foothill and Esperanza had five apiece.
There were several matches featuring some of the top-ranked wrestlers in the county.
At 126, Jaime Nunez of Canyon, ranked third, pulled off a 5-0 victory over Gino Roman of El Dorado, who is ranked fifth.
The Comanches had three other league champions, in addition to Nunez. Matt Nader, who was ranked No. 1 in the county at 120, made the drop to 113. He defeated Ryan O'Connor of Brea Olinda, 4-0, in the finals.
Also for Canyon, Ronnie (132) and Joaquin Collister (138) won titles.
Villa Park also had four individual champions as well, Nick Vega (106), Matt Brislawn (152), Ryan Walker (170) and Spencer Thiessen (182).
Other league champions: Trent Morris of El Dorado (120), Mark Newman of El Modena (145), Augie Oropeza of Brea Olinda (160), Steven Pappas of El Modena (195) and Dante Duke of El Dorado (220).
In the Trinity League:
St. John Bosco of Bellflower qualified 13 out of 14, including seven champions during the league finals at St. John Bosco. Servite qualified 12, with four individual champions.
All Trinity League medalists will compete in the CIF-SS Coastal Division Individuals at Pacifica High of Oxnard.
