Los Amigos ends Garden Grove's 47-game streak
The Los Amigos girls water polo team ended one of the longest league winning streaks in county history Tuesday night.
And it took the Lobos two overtime periods to do it.
The Lobos, ranked fifth in the CIF Division 7 poll, were led by seniors Leticia Zacarias and Brianna Salas with four goals each to defeat host Garden Grove, 11-10, in the Garden Grove League opener for both teams.
The Argonauts had won 47 consecutive league games, which included nine consecutive league titles.
"There's no words right now that can describe how much hard work these girls have put into it, so much dedication every day," Los Amigos third-year coach Manny Lepe said.
Defense and nerves were a big part early in the match.
Garden Grove, ranked second in Division 7, didn't start the scoring until 2:20 left in the opening period when senior defender Chrissie McCullogh scored on a penalty shot.
After a 2-2 tie at half, Los Amigos (10-5, 1-0) outscored Garden Grove (8-8, 0-1), 4-3, in the third period, three of which were lob goals by Zacarias from beyond 7 meters to surprise the Garden Grove goalie.
"It feels good to win for my school and my team," Zacarias said.
The Argonauts were led by attacker Vivianne Mai and Brianna Vi with three goals apiece. They each had a goal in the third period.
Salas tied the score, 9-9, with 1:13 remaining in the game on an amazing turnaround shot at the 2-meter mark.
Zacarias gave the Lobos the lead in the first overtime on her fourth lob score of the game.
Salas gave Los Amigos a two-goal lead with a long shot with 47 seconds left in the second overtime.
