PLAYOFF WATCH '11 PREVIEW
The playoff picture in boys water polo will become much clearer this week with the conclusion of the regular season. Here are some of the key matches and teams to watch:
Century League: Foothill is part of a four-team cluster behind first-place Villa Park and second-place Esperanza. The Knights (2-3 in league) could jump to third place with a victory at Brea Olinda (3-2) on Tuesday but need help in the Division 2 league. They also need Canyon (3-2 in league) to fall against visiting Villa Park and El Modena (2-3) to lose at Esperanza. Foothill holds the head-to-head tie-breaker with Canyon.
Garden Grove League: Los Amigos and Rancho Alamitos clash for the league title Tuesday night at Garden Grove at 6. Both are teams to watch in Division 7. La Quinta (1-2 in league) and Garden Grove (0-2) play for third place at 7 p.m.
Pacific Coast League: University (7-2 in league) could emerge as the outright second-place team with a victory at third-place Northwood (6-3) on Tuesday. Could a top-four seed in Division 2 be in the Trojans’ future?
Sea View League: Second-place Aliso Niguel (5-1 in league) plays host to first-place Capistrano Valley (7-0) on Tuesday with a chance to force a tie atop the Division 3 league. If the Wolverines win, there could be a big coin-flip to determine the No. 1 playoff seed for the league.
Sunset League: County Top-10 members Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos collide Wednesday night at Newport Harbor to settle second and third-place in the Division 1 league.
Trinity League: JSerra (2-1), Santa Margarita (2-1) and Servite (1-2) are contending for two automatic playoff spots behind first-place Mater Dei. The Lions play host to Mater Dei on Wednesday while Servite faces a must-win match against visiting Santa Margarita. In the past, the league has solved a three-way tie for second place with a coin-flip for second and playoff match for third place.
