Find the overall league and individual team previews for all six Garden Grove League teams.
COACHES’ POLL:
1. Garden Grove (36 points)
2. Santiago (26)
3T. Los Amigos (21)
3T. Rancho Alamitos (21)
5. La Quinta (16)
6. Bolsa Grande (6)
IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Los Amigos. There is no team in the league that returns as many key contributors as the Lobos, including junior quarterback Daniel Hernandez. Hernandez is one of several juniors that played a significant role for the team last season, gaining valuable experience in action. Though the underclassmen saw lots of playing time last season, the fact remains many are still juniors and still maturing. This season, can they take the next step and make the playoffs, or maybe even contend for the league title? One thing is for sure, Los Amigos will be the most improved team in the Garden Grove League.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION:
Garden Grove. The Argonauts finished 13-1 last season and undefeated in league play, but no team in the league is affected by graduation like they are, beginning with quarterback and leading rusher Sean Young. Young was a major force for Garden Grove and replacing his production will be difficult, but the Argonauts may have hope in Josh Webb. Webb played receiver last season and could slide to quarterback this season, taking on a similar role as Young. While the Argonauts defensive backfield will be solid, the team loses several key members from the front seven, including middle linebacker Zack Huff, who earned Defensive MVP of the Garden Grove League last season. The team is now under first-year coach Willy Puga, who served as the offensive coordinator last season for Garden Grove, so the transition should be smooth.
PLAYER TO WATCH:
Josh Webb, Garden Grove. The Argonauts’ offense with Webb at quarterback could be a perfect fit as Webb has dual-threat capabilities like last year’s league MVP and graduated Garden Grove quarterback Sean Young. It wouldn’t be a stretch to see Webb bring home the award this season.
OTHER TOP PLAYERS:
Daniel Hernandez, Los Amigos, Jr., QB; Felix Cruz, Los Amigos, Jr., LB; Avery Williams, Garden Grove, Sr., WR/DB; Salvador Ceja, Santiago, Sr., RB/WR/LB; Brian Perez, Santiago, Sr., RB; Julian Martinez, Santiago, Sr., RB; Daniel Torres, Santiago, Sr., WR/LB; Nicky Luu, La Quinta, Sr., RB; Andoni Hernandez, La Quinta, Sr., LB; Brett Hurley, Rancho Alamitos, Jr., LB; Jesse Lozano, Garden Grove, Sr., RB/LB; Miguel Carrion, Rancho Alamitos, Sr., RB; Chris Montes, Santiago, Sr., OL/DL; Lewis Reupena, La Quinta, Sr., WR/DB; Alex Espinoza, Bolsa Grande, Sr., WR/DB; Daniel Nguyen, Bolsa Grande, Sr., LB; Ray Herrera, Garden Grove, Sr., OL/DL
MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
Santiago at Garden Grove, Oct. 14. This match up decided the league title in 2009. It could prove to do the same this season. Toss in it’s the opening game of league and it doesn’t get more exciting than that.
TOUGHEST SCHEDULE:
Garden Grove. Argonauts have a strong nonleague schedule (Westminster, Woodbridge, Pacifica included) and then open league play with consecutive games against Santiago and Rancho Alamitos.
