First team
2010 boys volleyball player of the year
Opp/OH Cody Caldwell, Newport Harbor, junior
The Sailors' go-to player makes his second appearance on the all-county first team. One of the best all-around and smartest hitters, Caldwell is an offensive option from anywhere on the court. He helped Newport Harbor finish in second place in the Sunset League and reach the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals. Caldwell was also a unanimous first-team Sunset League selection and led Newport Harbor with 513 kills and 55 blocks. He also had 121 digs and 50 aces.
Libero Mike McMahon, Santa Margarita, senior
McMahon is a member of the junior Olympic training team and a big part of Santa Margarita's success this year. The Eagles finished undefeated in Trinity League play this season and advanced to the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals. McMahon carries a strong serve but is best known for his solid service-receive game and is attending Pepperdine in the fall. He was also selected to the Trinity League's first team.
Setter Brett Anderson, Esperanza, senior
The Aztecs claimed the Sunset League title, reached the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals and advanced to the CIF Division 1 regional championship match this season. Esperanza coach Isaac Owens said everything starts with Anderson at the setter position. His ability to set from almost anywhere on the court allowed the Aztecs' hitters to remain available options and kept defenses off-balanced. His play earned him co-MVP of the Sunset League honors with teammate Chris Hartig.
OH Joey Booth, Corona del Mar, senior
Corona del Mar has the player of the year, but the Sea Kings were far from a one-man show and Booth was the reason why. The USC-bound outside hitter finished the season with 247 kills, 36 blocks, 120 digs and 31 aces. Corona del Mar coach Steve Conti said Booth provided crucial emotional lifts on the court throughout the season and was a key contributor to the Sea Kings' CIF-SS Division 1 semifinal run.
OH Ryan Baine, Santa Margarita, junior
It's easy to make a case that Baine was the most improved player this season. He saw plenty of playing time as a sophomore last year, but emerged as the No. 1 option for Santa Margarita this season and finished with a hitting percentage above .350. His accuracy and reliability were important factors in Santa Margarita's Trinity League title and CIF-SS Division 1 semifinal appearance. Baine is also the co-MVP of the Trinity League.
MB/OH Spencer Rowe, Mission Viejo, senior
Rowe is a dynamic player and, like the talented ones can do, he can score from different court locations. His size and leaping ability allow him to hit over the block, making him difficult to stop. Rowe also worked hard on his ball control, and his improved passing was on display in the back row through the year. He was chosen to the South Coast League's first team and is attending UCLA in the fall.
MB Tim Frydendall, Orange Lutheran, senior
A couple Trinity League coaches said no game plan they drew up could slow Frydendall. He was a force in the middle this season for the Lancers. He led the team in kills with 257 and blocks with 57. He also had a .358 hitting percentage. Frydendall committed to Loyola-Chicago and was named as co-MVP of the Trinity League.
