“It’s been six years since we have beaten these guys and we finally said enough is enough,” McKee said. “We told our kids if you want to win league you’re going to have to knock out the champs.”
The Comanches (3-3, 1-0) outgained the Golden Hawks, 179-83, in the first half, which ended with Marceo Marchena scoring from a yard out to give Canyon a 17-7 lead.
The Golden Hawks looked to cut the lead in the third quarter on a 38-yard field goal attempt, but it was blocked. Jared Gobert then scored on a 16-yard run to extend the lead to 24-7.
Following an El Dorado (1-5, 0-1) fumble, the Comanches drove 68 yards on six plays to take a 30-7 lead.
Quarterback Kane Wilson led three scoring drives in the final 4:34, throwing for 138 yards and two TDs in the fourth quarter. He finished 17 of 26 for 173 yards.
Golden Hawks linebacker Billy Henley had four tackles for losses and scored on a 1-yard run late in the fourth quarter.
