Fryer on football: Week 5's games
GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 4 MATER DEI (4-0) vs. NARBONNE OF HARBOR CITY (4-0)
Where, when: Narbonne High, Friday, 7 p.m.
The last time: This is the first Mater Dei-Narbonne varsity football game.
The series: 0-0.
The coaches: Mater Dei, Bruce Rollinson (222-70-2); Narbonne, Manuel Douglas (60-22-1 at Narbonne since 2004)
Outlook: Everyone knows Mater Dei is better this year than last year, when the Monarchs started 1-3. Are the Monarchs improved enough to handle Narbonne? Narbonne is ranked No. 4 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports. Narbonne won the CIF-Los Angeles City Section championship last year, and this year has a state bowl game on its list of goals. Last week, the Gauchos beat Serra of Gardena, No. 10 in the state at the time, 22-9. Narbonne senior quarterback Tony Williams, who committed to Washington, threw for 175 yards and one touchdown against Serra, but usually he produces better numbers. Other outstanding players on the deep Narbonne team are receiver A.J. Richardson and linebacker Keishawn Bierria. Bierria last week returned a fumble 54 yards for a touchdown. Mater Dei is ranked No. 11 in California. The Monarchs beat Edison, 20-14, last week. That was a good building-block victory, but Narbonne's Gauchos might be the most athletic team Mater Dei will see this year. "We have to move the chains and keep their offense off of the field," Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson said, "because they have too volatile of an offense. On defense, we have to stay with our schemes and bend but don't break." Mater Dei also needs to win the turnovers battle. If it can do that, reduce the penalties (15 last week) and keep Narbonne's big plays to a minimum, Mater Dei can win this one.
Winner: Mater Dei
