The Lancers did that — and then some.
Bridgford was intercepted twice and sacked five times as Lakewood went on to defeat the Diablos, 28-7, at Lakewood.
Jerry Stone rushed for 169 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Lancers (6-6).
Lakewood advances to the semifinals next weekend and will play the winner of tonight’s Esperanza and Long Beach Poly game.
“I’m very disappointed,” Mission Viejo coach Bob Johnson said.
“They ran the ball and we didn’t. The turnovers hurt us. They smacked our butts.”
After a scoreless first quarter, the Lancers broke on top with 8:41 left in the second quarter. Stone raced 44 yards off tackle for a TD giving Lakewood a 7-0 lead.
Six plays after a Diablos punt, Jesse Scroggins lofted a 48-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Anderson increasing Lakewood’s lead to 14-0.
Mission Viejo squandered two excellent scoring opportunities in the first half.
The Diablos drove 13 plays on their first possession of the game to the Lancers 10-yard line.
However, a costly fumble, following a catch by Joey Branker, dribbled out of the end zone.
The Lancers were awarded the ball on the touchback.
Late in the first half, Bridgford was picked off at the Lakewood 5-yard line, foiling a second Lancers scoring opportunity.
Bridgford completed 21 of 42 passes for 245 yards, but Mission Viejo didn’t score until late in the fourth quarter on a short TD pass from Bridgford to Alex Mascarenas.
Bridgford was intercepted on the second play of the second half. That turnover led to a Lakewood touchdown.
Kevin Chandler had five catches for 84 yards and Marshall had five catches for 58 yards for the Diablos.
Stone scored on short TD runs twice in the third quarter as Lakewood built a 28-0 lead. Scroggins completed 10 passes for 184 yards a TD for the Lancers.
“Our offense made key plays and our defense came up with the big stops,” said Stone, who has rushed for 1,321 yards this season.
Jake Marshall led the Diablos with 64 yards rushing, giving him 1,026 yards for the season.
Lakewood forfeited four wins this season as a result of using an ineligible player.
"This was a big task for us tonight," said Lancers’ coach Thadd MacNeil. "We knew we had to get out after #16 (Bridgford) and try to stop him and our offense had to be able to run the ball."
Lakewood finished with 200 yards rushing.
