Laguna Beach knocks off first-place Estancia
LAGUNA BEACH – Laguna Beach girls basketball coach Mark Lewis said his team might have gotten caught up in the moment during a road loss to Estancia in the teams' first league match up this season.
On Thursday night, in the rematch, Laguna Beach took advantage of playing on its home court, stayed poised down the stretch and defeated Estancia, 43-37, in an Orange Coast League battle.
Laguna Beach (16-3, 4-2) had lost seven in a row to Estancia (14-7, 5-1), a streak which dated back to the 2009-10 season. The Breakers last defeated the Eagles, 61-55, on Feb. 5, 2009.
“I don’t really worry about the streaks,” Lewis said. “What it (the win) meant is Estancia was 5-0 and at the top of our league, and that’s really what I was focused on. I’m focused on the here and now, and that was an important win for our program for this season.”
With Laguna Beach team trailing by three points entering the fourth quarter, Breakers junior Jane Wallin essentially took over the game. Wallin scored nine of her 14 points in the final quarter and sparked a 15-3 run that gave Laguna Beach a 41-32 lead.
Wallin added five rebounds, three steals and three blocks to finish the night.
Freshman Jackie Cenan, who scored 30 points in the Breakers' 60-55 loss to Estancia on Jan. 10, was limited to 10 points, but she sparked her team defensively with a courageous effort while playing on an injured ankle. She added seven rebounds and two steals.
Both teams battled hard in the early stages, and Estancia took a 21-20 lead into halftime after Celia Duran drained a deep 3-pointer to beat the buzzer.
Duran scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half. She fouled out with 3:25 to go in the game.
