Martinez's four TDs ignite Laguna Beach
LAGUNA BEACH - Senior running back Drake Martinez helped Laguna Beach stay undefeated by leading a 56-13 victory over Calvary Chapel in an Orange Coast League matchup Friday night.
Martinez ran all over the Eagles (3-5, 0-3) and was also a force on defense. He started his night with a 40-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter, then scored again three minutes later from 7 yards out, giving the Breakers (7-0-1, 3-0) a 14-0 lead.
The Breakers also got solid nights from junior running back Nathan Lancaster and senior Robert Clemons III. Lancaster scored from 52 yards out after taking the a handoff, avoiding the first tackler and then making two others miss. He finished with three carries for 119 yards.
Clemons scored with less than 11 minutes left in the second quarter on a 71-yard touchdown run up the middle. He ran three times for 111 yards.
Martinez, who also plays safety, picked off an Eagles pass with less than four minutes to play in the second quarter and returned it 79 yards for the score, and a 49-0 lead. He finished the night with eight carries and 122 yards, including four touchdowns.
The Eagles finally got on the board in the second half. Junior running back Chris Turner scored from 1 yard out in the third quarter and from 4 yards in the fourth. Turner was the lone bright spot the Eagles as he rushed 14 times for 64 yards.
The Breakers defense was outstanding, putting constant pressure on Eagles quarterback Colin Kearon.
