Jim Kunau, who won two CIF-SS championships during a 19-year reign at Orange Lutheran, has been hired as the new coach at Canyon, the school announced Wednesday night.

He replaces Brent McKee, who stepped down following the 2012 season.

Kunau transformed Orange Lutheran into a powerhouse before he was relieved of his duties at the school following the 2011 season.

His record at Orange Lutheran was 182-52-3 with 13 league championships and one state championship.

“I am excited for the opportunity to serve at Canyon, which is in the heart of the community where my family and I reside," Kunau said in a statement released by the school. "I believe this is a program with enormous potential that is hungry to pursue excellence.

"I love the community where we live and look forward to actively contributing to it through our football program at Canyon."
