Foothill starts fast, smothers Wilson in semifinals
GARDEN GROVE – The No. 10 Foothill girls basketball team never trailed and defeated Wilson of Hacienda Heights, 64-54, in the Garden Grove Tournament semifinals on Friday at Garden Grove High.
The Knights (11-4) got off to a quick 11-0 start as all five starters scored before the Wildcats (8-6) got on the board. The Knights used a trapping defense early on and the Wildcats had trouble even attempting a shot as they turned over the ball with travels and shot-clock violations.
Wildcats forward Kelli Calton kept her team in the game early, scoring 14 of her team's 16 first-half points, but it wasn't enough as the Knights led by 10. Sydney Sharp had eight points in the first half for the Knights.
In the third, the Knights' Hailey James got going. She scored 11 points in the quarter, including nine in a row, and the Knights built a 21-point advantage. The Knights shot the 3-pointer extremely well and used great ball movement all game long, making nine three's in the contest.
The Knights dominated the rebounding battle the entire night and kept the pace at a comfortable level. The Wildcats couldn't get into their offensive sets the entire night and scored mostly off broken plays.
The Wildcats chipped away at the lead and made things interesting in the fourth, using an 11-0 run to make the score 57-48 with less than four minutes remaining. But Ryann Garcia scored on the possession after a time-out to take the lead back to double digits.
James finished with 24 points after scoring only two in the first half. She also made four 3-pointers. Sharp had 11 points for the Knights and Calton had 23 for the Wildcats.

Westminster 65, St. Joseph of Lakewood 42: Lisa Tran scored 17 points for the Lions (12-1) as they earned a spot in the championship game against Foothill. Center Maggie Dumphy had 16 for Westminster.
