Kennedy nips Tustin, 31-28
Fighting Irish overcome 28-3 deficit with four consecutive TDs in second half.
ANAHEIM - Jordan Collins sprinted into the end zone untouched from 2 yards out with 1:12 left in the fourth quarter to cap a 5-play, 78-yard drive and complete a furious late-game comeback as Kennedy outlasted Tustin, 31-28, in a nonleague game at Western High on Friday.
The Fighting Irish overcame a 28-3 deficit with four consecutive touchdowns in the second half and took advantage of a knee injury to the Tillers’ Anthony Wilkerson (127 yards rushing) to make Brit Johnson’s coaching debut a memorable one.
“I’m speechless,” Johnson said. “It looked grim in the first half, but I told these guys in the locker room to keep fighting and they did. We shut (Tustin) down in the second half and we got some timely plays. It feels great.”
Collins caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Andy Peterson with 36 seconds left in the third quarter and Nick Arellano returned Taylor Richardson’s fumble 20 yards on the final play of the third quarter to cut the lead to 28-17.
After Kennedy stopped Tustin ’s shortened running attack in the fourth quarter, Collins finished off two consecutive drives with rushing scores, including the game winner.
