DOWNEY - Kennedy coach Brit Johnson had no trouble dissecting his team’s 21-20 loss to Downey on Friday.
"They made plays, and we didn’t do the little things," Johnson said. "When you don’t do the little things you lose games by one point."
The Fighting Irish (2-3) made big plays during the game, such as Christian Tekurio’s 61-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Kyle White’s 59-yard touchdown jaunt.
But a missed extra point by Kennedy in the third quarter following White’s score proved to be costly. T.J. Faitoa’s subsequent 5-yard touchdown run lifted Kennedy to only a 20-14 lead late in the third quarter.
The host Vikings (2-2) then rallied on Keith Holland’s 5-yard run with 9:24 left, and Brian Sandoval’s extra point was decisive.
The Irish had just 89 yards of offense in the first half. But White and Jordan Collins, who rushed eight times for 50 yards, led Kennedy on two scoring drives in the third quarter.
