Kelley's defense helps Woodbridge defeat Northwood
IRVINE -- Derek Calderon ran for a pair of touchdowns and Kyle Kelley completely dominated the game defensively to help keep Woodbridge’s playoff hopes alive with a 27-14 victory over Northwood in a Pacific Coast League game at Irvine High on Friday.
The Warriors (4-5, 1-3) need a victory against Irvine next week to remain eligible for an at-large playoff berth.
Kelley did his part. The senior defensive end had his way with the offensive line of the Timberwolves (2-7, 0-4), often beating double teams, en route to six sacks and a deflected pass.
Woodbridge limited Northwood to 142 total yards of offense. The Warriors forced three interceptions and recorded eight sacks.
“To hold this offense to 14 points is huge,” Woodbridge coach Rick Gibson said. “Kelley is a playmaker. He’s a big reason our defense controlled the game.”
Northwood’s Nathan Nelleson nailed field goals from 34 and 36 yards out to cut lead to 7-6 with 9:27 left in the second quarter, but the Warriors took over after that.
Calderon took an inside handoff, shook off two defenders and broke loose for a 72-yard run for a 14-6 lead with 8:28 left in the first half. He scored on a 16-yard run on the next series and Donald Jackson hit the first of his two field goals for a 24-6 lead at the half.
Nick Greenberg had two interceptions and Jeffrey Azuogo had another.
Ricky Bautista threw for 200 yards on 15 for 25 passing but couldn’t find the end zone. Kevin Norman hauled in eight passes for 150 yards. Addison Damasco scored from 4 yards out with 1:08 left in the game for the Northwood’s only touchdown.
