Hearn, Williamson lead JSerra to victory
Bases loaded, no outs, sixth inning of a scoreless game.
Hey, Bobby Hearn. Get out there and pitch us out of this mess.
That Hearn did. The JSerra junior pitcher struck out the first two Orange Lutheran batters he faced, got the third out on a ground out, and shut down Lutheran in the seventh and final inning of a 1-0 victory for JSerra's Lions in a Trinity League game Tuesday at JSerra.
Clay Williamson supplied the game's run with a home run in the bottom of the sixth.
It was a crucial game. JSerra and Orange Lutheran had 1-2 league records going into this week.
"Nobody wants to be 1-3 in this league," JSerra coach Brett Kay said. "That's what a game of 1-2 teams looks like. It was a battle."
JSerra, ranked No. 3 in Orange County and No. 8 in CIF-Southern Section Division 1, is 8-4 overall, 2-2 in league. Lutheran's Lancers, 6-5 overall and 1-3 in league, are No. 6 in the county poll and No. 9 in CIF-SS Division 1.
Hearn, a right-hander, tried to keep the game's big picture out his mind.
"I just came out, took it one pitch at a time and close the door on them," Hearn said. "I made sure I was pounding the strike zone, because I didn't want to walk a guy there."
Both teams' pitchers were terrific. Lutheran junior left-handed starter Art Moran-Vidrio shut out JSerra through three innings before a left shoulder problem forced him to give way to junior Matt Carlson, who went the rest of the way and gave up only the solo homer by Cal State Fullerton signee Williamson. JSerra junior righty Trevor Charpie shut out the Lancers until Hearn replaced him in the sixth.
