Notes: Irvine SoCal tourney returns this week
The 32-team Irvine Southern California Women’s Water Polo Championships, the last major tournament of the regular season, will be played Thursday through Saturday.
The William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, Foothill and Corona del Mar will serve as the venues. The top-16 teams will play at Woollett on Saturday, with the championship match set for 3:15 p.m.

Seven teams ranked in Orange County’s Top 10, including No. 1 and top-seeded Foothill, are among the contenders.
Santa Barbara, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar round-out the top-four seeds.
Friday’s 6 p.m. quarterfinals could feature four intriguing matches. Among the possibilities: a clash between host Corona del Mar and Los Alamitos.

Corona del Mar coach and former San Clemente standout Sam Bailey earned the Doc Hunkler Distinguished Women's Coaching Award at the recent USA Water Polo awards dinner.
